The Vineyards at Dodon presents an insider’s food & wine tour of Southern Tuscany & Umbria from our base in the hilltop town of Montepulciano

6 nights based in stunning accommodations in the heart of Montepulciano

Medieval, hilltop towns with breathtaking views. Sipping some of the best wines Italy has to offer while overlooking the Tuscan countryside. Tuscan food at its finest. We will visit the following wine regions – Orvieto, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico.

We will be based in a splendidly restored Palazzo in the exceptional town of Montepulciano for our 6 nights. Each day, we will venture out for wine, food and a little bit of culture. At night, you are on your own to wander the quiet streets of Montepulciano, watch the sunset over the Tuscan hills or just continue your eating and drinking adventure.

Pick up in Rome and drop off in Florence Please plan to arrive in Rome no later than the Sunday prior to the tour. All the flights to Rome are overnight flight, so flying out of the United States no later than Saturday.

Arriving early or extending your stay We think Rome is best explored on your own or in very small groups. We have spent plenty of time in Rome in the last few years and are happy to assist with hotel recommendations and things to see & do.

Pick up in Rome, day 1 We will meet you at 10 am at Eataly, an easy meet up point near the Ostiense train station. The location is approximately 15-20 minutes from central Rome. We will have great wines and a fantastic lunch outdoors with Giovanni in Orvieto before heading to see the Duomo and wandering the charming streets of Orvieto for a bit. We will arrive in the late afternoon and check in to our rooms in the heart of Montepulciano.

Eating, drinking & a little bit of culture - days 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Our tour has its own daily rhythm. Each day consists of a nice relaxed (not too early) breakfast before we head out for a bit of culture, a wine tasting and a long leisurely lunch or dinner. In the evening, you can explore the beauty and stillness of Montepulciano. If you are full from today’s lunch, just grab a glass of wine and perhaps a bruschetta from a nearby wine bar. Still hungry? Among the 50 or so restaurants in town, there are at least a dozen restaurants in Montepulciano we enjoy.

Day 2 – After the drive up from Rome yesterday, today’s schedule is easy A little culture – You will get to know your base of Montepulciano – history, cool shopping, views and ancient Etruscan wine cellars. Eating – We are going to have a lunch at one of favorite restaurants in Montepulciano. The setting is intimate and elegant and the food and wine pair perfectly with this ambiance. Wine tasting – We will visit Olimpia and her picture-perfect winery called Le Bertille, a very small producer of Vino Nobile, just down the hill from Montepulciano. Asurion Confidential

Day 3 Wine & lunch – A wonderful tasting of the world-famous Brunello di Montalcino with Gianluca and his wife Kai at Santa Giulia. Then, we get to eat lunch with the family with a delicious home cooked meal served up by Nona Mirella, Gianluca’s mom. A little culture – A visit to the gardens of nearby La Foce, a mini paradise. What will be in bloom this month?

Day 4 A little culture – A guided tour of medieval Siena (or wander the streets on your own if you prefer). Wine tasting – We will meet up with Andrea of I Sodi winery at his family’s incredible vineyard in the historic Chianti Classico district. Most people say this is their favorite winery visit of the tour, and that is really saying something! Eating – We will have a lunch and wine in Siena at Pretto. When we arrive back in Montepulciano, we will have traditional Tuscan soup and some wine with friend Cristina.

Day 5 A little culture – This is a relaxing afternoon to explore the charming village of Pienza. You may even consider purchasing your next residence in Pienza after spending an afternoon here. Eating – We are going to have dinner as a group tonight in Montepulciano

Day 6 Cooking class, lunch and wine tasting – We are going to have a cooking class and lunch at a stunning location facing the largest mountain in this part of Tuscany.

Day 7 - drop off in Florence We will drop you off in Florence (at airport or the train station Santa Maria Novella) at around noon for you to continue your Italian adventure.

Accommodations

We will be based in a few unique accommodations, all proximate to one another in the heart of Montepulciano. All of the rooms have air conditioning. Once your deposit has been made, Tinto Travels will be in touch to discuss room selection.

Casa del Fauno: Two large, restored rooms each with private baths featuring high ceilings just across the street from Palazzo Carletti. Breakfast is served daily at a picturesque restaurant a 5 minute walk from Casa del Fauno. The rooms are located on the second floor of the building. There is no elevator. We, of course, will assist with luggage. One of the rooms can accommodate separate beds. Price per person is $4,300.

Palazzo Carletti: A restored palace in the heart of Montepulciano. There are now 7 rooms in total at the Palazzo. Breakfast is served daily in the main room of the Palazzo. Because of the historic nature of the Palazzo, it does not have an elevator. The rooms are located on the “noble” (second floor). Of course, we assist with luggage.

Two large, elegant rooms with the names Ferdinando III and Egle have recently been restored (as of December 2024) at Palazzo Carletti, each over 360 square feet in size. The price per person is $4,700.

The Albany deluxe suite has a separate living room with frescoed ceilings and the bedroom has a panoramic view to the Tuscan countryside. The price per person is $5,400.

The Carletti deluxe double room is approximately 500 square feet and features a bathroom with a large soaking tub and an en suite Turkish bath featuring a shower and steam room. The price per person is $5,200.

The Nerazzini deluxe double room is over 330 square feet in size and faces the main street of Montepulciano. The price per person is $4,700.

The Leopold III double room is approximately 320 square feet and faces the main street of Montepulciano. The price per person is $4,700.

The Alfieri double room is approximately 240 square feet and has a large walk-in shower. The price per person is $4,500.

Palazzo San Donato is a historical building completely and recently restored with original furniture from the 1700s for a step back in time but with every comfort. The suites consist of a very large living room, double bedroom and private bathroom, they are all equipped with satellite TV, minibar with water available, soft linen, and in the bathrooms vanity set and hairdryer. As we saw, our suites have a view on the main square of Montepulciano (Piazza Grande) or on the other side on the valley.

Palazzo San Donato is a 5 minute walk to Palazzo Carletti
